For more than four years, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's full-scale invasion. During this time, Russia has destroyed lives, cities, schools and hospitals. But this war is also being waged against Ukrainian culture, education and books. On Saturday 1 August, a targeted Russian attack destroyed the automated logistics center of the Ukrainian publishing corporation RNK-Ranok in Kharkiv.
According to preliminary estimates, around 8 million books were destroyed, including 600,000 school textbooks that were meant to reach Ukrainian children before the beginning of the new school year. These were not simply books stored in a warehouse. They were stories, textbooks and educational materials waiting to reach children, teachers, schools, libraries and families across Ukraine.
The international publishing community is deeply saddened by this attack on Ukraine’s publishing and educational infracstructure. Ranok is the Ukrainian home of two RCL authors, Elly Griffiths and Tim Coulson, and they have been working tirelessly through adversity to bring our authors’ books to Ukrainian readers.
